I work with workers in crisis. I’ve been to hundreds of factories across the globe that were being closed. I’ve observed the damage losing work causes, the anguish of workers whose lives were being destroyed, and the communities torn apart in the aftermath.


It seems likely that casual, project-based work isn’t going to go away any time soon.

While Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are battling it out on the appropriate rate for minimum wage ($12 and $15, respectively), economic policies pertaining to “shared ownership” strategies, such as employee ownership and profit-sharing, deserve greater attention. Both forms of shared ownership have been shown to boost economic growth by increasing productivity, profits, wages, and firm innovation.
The Great Recession fueled new interest in worker-owned cooperatives, in which employees double as business owners. Though rare, worker-owned co-ops are on the rise. Advocates say when employees are in control, workers benefit and businesses are more stable. But worker co-ops have to function in a capitalist world. Can they really compete?
