Report: Re-Member-ing the Electric Cooperative

Electric cooperatives have been the backbone of the nation’s rural electrical system for more than 80 years. Their mission and business model now face more challenges than ever, from financial to contractual to basic member control. But the opportunity is equally great, with a chance for member-driven investment to power hundreds of local economies across the rural United States.

It is after business hours in Boston’s cavernous City Hall, but down an escalator, past shuttered service windows and darkened offices, the day’s activity is just beginning. The initiative is engaging in market research about the feasibility of opening a co-op.

West Dayton has been unable to attract a large grocer since the Kroger on Gettysburg Avenue closed in 2008.

Antagonistic Co-operation

The word "antagonistic" and its relatives generally have negative connotations. Nobody likes to be antagonized. In literature, the antagonist in a story works against the protagonist or main character, so we do not like to see the antagonist succeed.
