Two UK co-operatives to star in feature-length TV documentary

Two "revolutionary" co-operatives have been chosen to star in a feature-length TV documentary to be aired across Europe.

Equal Care Co-operative and Suma, both from West Yorkshire, were selected ahead of thousands of co-operatives from across the UK. The pair will feature alongside co-operatives from mainland Europe, with filming set to take place later this year (2024). The documentary will be pitched to broadcasters in countries across the continent.

Being cooperative

Why do Land O’ Lakes, Ocean Spray, and Sunkist retain the cooperative structure? Perhaps the primary reason is the tax advantage. Much like the LLC form of organization, cooperatives are not taxed on surplus earnings, which are distributed to members as patronage dividends. Thus, members of a cooperative are taxed only once on their earnings — at the individual level — and not on the cooperative level. By contrast, earnings of corporations are taxed twice — at the corporate level and as dividends to individuals.

‘New Economies’ and the Rebuilding of Democratic Power

We need to look more directly at how we can stimulate a new structural transformation of civil society. It will be a broad process that explores how we can rebuild democratic power to facilitate mass involvement in civil society and, by extension, our political system. Though there seems to be an instinctual knowledge of this problem, many are unaware of this prehistory of civil society, and understandably find it difficult to see an alternative to the memberless NGO, whose unelected governance, unreliable funding streams, and informal support base is inadequate to the challenges of the present, let alone the disruptions of the future.

In the Absence of Care: Building Solidarity in Athens

The third Panhellenic assembly of solidarity clinics and pharmacies took place in November 2013 in the auditorium of the occupied “Elpis” General Public Hospital of Athens. Holding the assembly at Elpis was a symbolic and political act of solidarity: The hospital’s medical staff was at the time on strike, protesting the “catastrophic effects of the austerity policies” on the operation of health care infrastructure.

Storied: San Francisco is an audio and visual documentary about artists, bartenders, community leaders, doctors, lawyers, and business owners who have one thing in common—San Francisco is a place where they live, work, or do their thing in. The stories of people, the stories of places, they need to be told.

This project is a collection of stories about life in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We want to further enrich the experience of being here by learning about the many people who've come before us, as well as those who continue to add to the feeling that this place is special. It's also about getting to know your neighbors through hearing their stories. And we hope that you'll be inspired by the people you meet here.

We stand with the BIPOC community, especially those folks in the Bay Area, and all who fight for racial and social justice and equality.

Other Avenues Grocery Cooperative

Celia LoBuono Gonzalez joins us on the show this episode to share her story and that of Other Avenues Grocery Cooperative.

The Rural Power Coalition (RPC) is a group of place-based organizations representing rural electric cooperative member-owners from the five dirtiest electric cooperatives in the United States. The RPC sees a future for electric cooperatives that is grounded in justice, democracy, and resilience. To achieve this vision, the RPC has put forth a bold, yet common-sense proposal to help all rural electric cooperatives make this transition and build a clean energy system for every resident in their service areas.

Power to the People

At a moment when the world is awakening to the clear and present need to transition our energy system, a hopeful light gleams from the rural landscapes of America. The Rural Power Coalition (RPC), a diverse alliance of US advocacy groups serving rural communities from Alabama to Alaska, has taken another step forward with the release of “Power to the People: The Story of Rural Electric Cooperatives.” This animated short film that premiered today during the annual PowerXchange Conference in San Antonio, Texas, is not just a tale of the past; it’s a clarion call for a greener, more equitable future.

Bayard Rustin: The Links in Our Lives

Bayard Rustin, who was one of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s key advisors, as well as a planner of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a leader in social movements for peace, civil rights, non-violence, and LGBTQ+ rights, is famous today for organizing the 1963 March on Washington. In those days, owing to him being gay, Rustin’s name and accomplishments were hidden from public view. It led him to be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013.

Tell REI: Negotiate a Contract with Your Workers by the End of 2024!

We are the green vests of the REI Union, and we need your help demanding that Co-op leadership negotiate a fair contract NOW.

We’ve been trying to negotiate a contract with REI since 2022, but the company has been dragging its feet for years. We’ve filed over 80 instances of unfair labor practice charges against the company for their pattern of bad-faith bargaining, but it’s time we march on REI’s corporate offices and call on the company to reach a deal.

The Art of the Report

Early in my 35-year career as a group dynamics professional, I became aware that most people only digest and retain about 20% of what happens when I work with them. Ugh.

I believe there are many reasons for this:

—There's typically a lot going on, and it's easy to drop stitches.

—The tendency to be so self-absorbed (how does this impact me?) that they miss the bigger picture.

—A lot of folks aren't that good at listening.

The Solidarity Economy in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia

On October 18, 2023, the Center for Global Justice lost at dear friend--the renowned Russian marxist scholar/activist Aleksandr Buzgalin. In commemoration of his life and legacy, the Center is rebroadcasting his last program with the Center-- "The Solidarity Economy in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia"--originally broadcast on May 30, 2022. Buzgalin, himself a left opponent of bureaucracy and authoritarianism, refutes in this talk a widespread myth about the former Soviet Union that depicts it as a monolithic totalitarian system devoid of social movements of any significance. Instead he presents a more nuanced picture by reviewing the little-known forms of workers’ democracy that existed in the USSR along with the general characteristic of post-soviet capitalism in Russia.
