Cooperatives 're-emergence' not revival of planned economy

The term gongxiaoshe, or supply and marketing cooperatives, has attracted wide attention since a report by Hubei Daily in late October said Hubei province has restored and reconstructed 1,373 local gongxiaoshe in almost every county and town.

Since such cooperatives used to be very common during the planned economy era, some people are claiming their "re-emergence" is an indication of planned economy making a comeback in China.

However, this is nothing but overreaction to a normal development.

Lexington Co-op management rejects voluntary recognition of union

On Wednesday, Lexington Co-op Workers United sent a letter to the Co-op’s Board of Directors, announcing the formation of an organizing committee.

They also called on management to sign the Fair Election Principles and recognize their union, Workers United Upstate New York. This is the same union which helped Spot Coffee and Starbucks in their unionization efforts.

As many people are coming to the fediverse from birdsite (that's what we call Twitter), it's important that we be intentional. A Mastodon server is just a tool, not a solution. There are lots of other fediverse tools out there as well. But what matters above all is how we use that tool, and how we co-govern it. If everyone just all joins the same server, we will probably end up with something worse than Twitter. Lots of servers, also, are run by admins who do not necessarily have accountability to their users.

Cooperative Movement Worried That Politicians Using Cooperatives for Political Expediency

The Cooperative Movement in Zambia has expressed concern on how Cooperatives have become a fertile ground for mobilization by politicians. Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Let the People Talk program on Phoenix FM, Global Entrepreneurship Network Managing Director Edwin Zulu noted with concern that politicians are using Cooperatives for political expediency as opposed to mobilizing people to form Cooperatives for business purposes.

Eastern Ky. Mutual Aid groups need your help

Another branch of the Eastern Kentucky Mutual Aid group is hosting a holiday drive for Lechter County residents affected by the summer flooding. 

Jessica Shelton, director of the Appalachian Media Institute at Appalshop, is volunteering with the effort. 

“Mutual aid is a big community, region-wide effort,” Shelton said. “The community is this whole region. And there are people in different areas of the region that are focusing on more local efforts for mutual aid.”
