Examining several solidarity economy projects by farming and fishing communities, this paper seeks to evaluate the limits and achievements of such experiments. Tentatively, it argues that these experiments offer possibilities for a democratic and sustainable arrangement of communal ownership and resource allocation. However, these practices remain limited to the local level. Through this inquiry, this study hopes to intervene dispossession- and oligarchy-centric explanations of Indonesia’s rural political economy.

Many rural communities in the US have undergone massive de-democratisations of their socio-economies; now variously populated with big-box stores, franchise chain developments, and acquisitions and subsidiarisations by regional, national, and transnational corporations. Mooney (2004) in Democratizing Rural Economy comments that agricultural co-operatives remain one of the few remaining economic forms in the agricultural and rural sectors that continues to bring democratic voice to rural economies.

Commercial Community Ownership as a Strategy for Just Development

Many excellent resources exist on these topics, and are increasingly highlighting powerful efforts led by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities that continue long traditions of cooperation, mutual aid, and community care.

Communal Labor in Ecovillages: Contradictions, Impasses, and Possibilities within the Notion of Self-sufficiency

Our goal is to outline the concept of communal labor in ecovillages of Brazil. To do that, we considered three elements: (1) political orientation for self-sufficiency; (2) technical-productive orientation in self-managed work and in plural economic practices; and (3) socio-environmental orientation centered on the recovery of biodiversity. We collected data in four ecovillages for 49 days, through a methodological path of inspiration ethnography with fieldnote and participant observation, followed by remote monitoring for 22 months.
