The council also adopted a resolution in support of the development of worker cooperatives in Oakland. The city’s Business Assistance Center will now promote cooperatives as a model and provide information to the community about how to start a cooperative.
The 'new economy' movement offers many models, projects and activities for motivated community groups, whether they call themselves REconomy, or not – cooperatives and social enterprises, complementary currencies and community exchange schemes, local economy studies and reports. Each of these nudge us forward.

The idea of co-operatives in Athens dates further back than both the Vine and Athensworks. Local restaurant Casa Nueva was founded in 1985, following the closure of a restaurant named Casa Que Pasa.
A group of eight of its unemployed workers decided they wanted to open their own worker-owned business, Candida Stamp, human resources coordinator at Casa, said.
