PARIS (AP) — The government has shut down, the corner baker is away for a month, and traffic is running with uncanny finesse.

In Cooperation vs. Gentrification: Bed Stuy Strives to Stay Local, The Laura Flanders Show explores ways people in the Bed Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn are using co-ops to find ways to benefit local communities and prevent the displacement caused by gentrification.

The council also adopted a resolution in support of the development of worker cooperatives in Oakland. The city’s Business Assistance Center will now promote cooperatives as a model and provide information to the community about how to start a cooperative.

The 'new economy' movement offers many models, projects and activities for motivated community groups, whether they call themselves REconomy, or not – cooperatives and social enterprises, complementary currencies and community exchange schemes, local economy studies and reports. Each of these nudge us forward.

A phenomenon deserving more attention by those interested in the debates on Socialism in the 21st Century is the development of the cooperative and associative sector in Nicaragua.

What are cooperatives and how do they work? What is their role in movements for justice, democracy, and equity? And how can you form a co-op in your community?

The idea of co-operatives in Athens dates further back than both the Vine and Athensworks. Local restaurant Casa Nueva was founded in 1985, following the closure of a restaurant named Casa Que Pasa.   

A group of eight of its unemployed workers decided they wanted to open their own worker-owned business, Candida Stamp, human resources coordinator at Casa, said.
