Cooperatives in Puerto Rico Need Help

Co-operatives employ almost 10 per cent of the world’s population a new report has revealed.

The programme aims to strengthen producers’ capacity to make the most of agricultural products that cannot be sold due to some minor aspect faults but maintain the same nutritive value.
One of the worker co-ops involved is Frutalcoop, which is using plums and apples for energy bars and salsa sauces and guavas for food toppings, soaps and body lotions.

TRUJILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico — It's 10 minutes to noon, and Alexandra Rodriguez Rios has already cooked and delivered more than 60 lunch plates to residents in her co-op living community.
In Punta Allen, Mexico, a lobster fishing cooperative supports the community and the environment.
“We believe the co-op model is a win for the government, the taxpayer and the consumer. It requires no taxpayer dollars, creates hundreds of direct jobs, generates a revenue stream for government above direct taxation and can be put in place by 1 July 2018 ensuring Albertans have access to safe, regulated cannabis from a diverse group of companies,” said Mr Karasiuk.
