When Feeling Good is Bad

There are times and places where alleviating some suffering for the short term is valuable and desirable, but there are plenty of others where easing pain in the short-term is actually harmful.  Pain, after all, isn't just some negative sensation — it's a signal that we're being damaged in some way and need to do something to stop that damage from occuring.

Naomi Klein has an interesting article in the latest issue of the Nation, Daring to Dream in the Age of Trump. I recommend it. Much to appreciate, disagree with, and discuss. I want to focus on two features of it, one I find quite surprising and one that is so typical and so disempowering of the Democratic Left.

Let's stop trying to squeeze blood from a turnip. Green movement diversity watchdog, Green 2.0 released telling data last week on the American environmental movement's top 40 NGOs. Three years after the publishing of State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations, the new "Transparency [Report] Card" shows that "staff, leadership, and boards of mainstream environmental organizations and foundations are still overwhelmingly white."
