In Geneva, Switzerland, Equilibre Housing Co-op is actively trying to lower its environmental footprint by using straw bale insulation and solar panels. A renewable, naturally occurring material, straw is also an excellent insulator. Straw panels are very light and can be 120+ minute fireproof.

For Jones, the cooperative model became a north star, a way to democratize ownership and control of the business while maintaining a non-hierarchical workplace. “As a worker co-op, my team votes me down sometimes, but that's how we get the best decision for the group,” Jones notes.

When Bloomington, Indiana, was looking to fund a recent affordable housing project, they looked outside their city — and even their state — to secure financing. This year’s congress, originally planned for 2020 but postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, marks the ICA’s 125th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Statement on the Cooperative Identity. The ICA adopted the Statement on the Cooperative Identity in 1995, which includes the definition of a co-operative, co-operative values, and the seven co-operative principles.
So what about Defector? According to the financial statement, it has 23 employees, revenue of $3.2 million, and expenses of $3 million. Ninety-five percent of that money comes from subscribers, and the rest from a few ad campaigns and business partnerships. It's set up as a worker cooperative, so important decisions are made through a vote of the employee-owners, who also share any profits. For a brand-new media company started essentially with a coffee can full of laundry quarters, those are excellent numbers.
The Midtown Farm in Tucson, Arizona, is an offshoot of the Flowers & Bullets Collective in the Barrio Centro neighborhood.
