New Possibilities for Producer Cooperatives

Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) recently released a case study of two long-standing producer marketing cooperatives. Over the course of more than two years as part of Northeast SARE Partnership Project ONE19-332, CISA provided in-depth support to Our Family Farms (OFF) and The Pioneer Valley Grower’s Association (PVGA), two cooperatives serving dozens of farms in western Massachusetts.

The Los Angeles Eco-Village Intentional Community consists of approximately 40 folks who have moved to the neighborhood to live more ecologically and more cooperatively.

Gilda Haas Talks Worker Co-ops

Gilda is a co-founder and Senior Advisor to the L.A. Co-op Lab which works to build L.A.’s capacity for creating and sustaining worker-owned cooperatives as one way to push back against gentrification, the gig economy, and economic exclusion. Gilda also represents L.A. Co-op Lab on the loan committee and board of the national Seed Commons financial cooperative.

Some of your favourite games may have been made by a co-op without you even knowing. In recent years, co-ops have been making themselves known in the indie game space. 2018’s critically-acclaimed Dead Cells was developed by the worker cooperative Motion Twin, which has been operating since 2001. From their website, “We don’t have a boss. We’re all equal and we wanted that to show, both in the way our games are made and in the way we organise ourselves.”
