NYC’s Mutual Aid Movement at a Turning Point

A year and a half later, East Brooklyn Mutual Aid has undergone multiple evolutions, organizers told City Limits in interviews this summer. In the spring of 2020, as word about the organization’s work spread, more people began volunteering, and more families reached out to ask for help. Soon they were buying produce and other food in bulk from the Restaurant Depot. Then they collaborated with a group called the Brooklyn Packers to source food in larger quantities at more affordable prices.

Pachamama Coffee Cooperative: 2021 Sustainability Award Winner

Pachamama is a roaster and retailer of specialty coffee collectively owned by thousands of smallholder farmers across Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia. Founded in 2006, Pachamama has been serving its producer members for nearly two decades. Four Ways Co-operatives Can Be Used to Support Indigenous Agriculture

Food sovereignty is closely linked to the overall sovereignty of a First Nation, suggests Robson. He shares a story of the Quapaw Nation. The Nation reclaimed their food sovereignty by slowly developing a food system they control, from raising bison and cattle to processing the meat products and growing vegetables, beekeeping, and roasting coffee.

The Future of Cooperation

Guest speaker Dr. Caroline Shenaz Hossein (Associate Professor of Global Development and Political Science, University of Toronto) will speak on the future of cooperation; acknowledging black feminist economies in the Global South and beyond.

Black women in the African Diaspora engage in solidarity economies through a form of mutual aid called ROSCAs. These 'Banker Ladies' draw on ancient African traditions of Tontines and Susu that are informal and prioritize the collective.

Why Citizens and not Workers

By challenging the oppressive role that the system has predetermined for the working class, a path is open for the “humanization” of the latter, to use a phrase by Bookchin. He insisted that this crucially depends upon the ability of workers to undo their “workerness” and advance themselves beyond class consciousness and class interest to a community consciousness — as free citizens who alone can establish a future ethical, rational, and ecological society. [8]

To Win or To Deliberate…That Is the Question

In this blog I argue that root democracy, a central notion of the Growing Democracy Project, is the driving force of democratic deliberation: 1) wanting to hear and understand the other, especially when there is a conflict of any kind; and 2) being willing to disclose what is happening for you and what you want, especially in the context of a difficult problem.

Covid Couldn’t Stop Worker-Owned Co-ops

Collaboration and democratic decision making is just part of how worker owned businesses, or co-ops, fared better than other companies during the pandemic. By and large they survived, even thrived, and today they’re less likely to experience the labor shortages many businesses face as the economy reopens.

Cooperatives: Working Toward a Common Goal

Organic Valley was established in 1988 under the name CROPP (Coulee Region Organic Produce Pool). Our founding members met during the farm crisis of the late 1980s to form a cooperative that would help provide a stable pay price to farmers by growing quality organic food. Organic Valley continues to be owned by our farmers and driven by our mission. Every single farmer-member has a vote on decisions that impact the co-op, such as animal care standards and pay prices.
