As Covid-19 continues to impact countries all over the world, global food security is at risk.

The pandemic is affecting food supply and demand, posing challenges to small-scale farmers who face difficulties accessing markets to sell their products or buy essential inputs.

While the majority of agri food co-operatives are continuing to operate, they have to adapt to a new environment.

A boom in trailer parks converting into community owned cooperatives

These communities are also seen as increasingly attractive investments by the likes of private equity firms. The Private Equity Stakeholder Project estimates that they provide a reliable annual return of 4% or more, which is double the rate of real estate trust return. These businesses seek to maximise the rent fees while spending the minimum amount possible to maintain the infrastructure. A great cause of distress to the residents is often the rent increases, poor infrastructure and the threat of being priced out.

Latinx Cooperative Research

Latinx people have long been an influential and integral part of the U.S. cooperative movement. Although not the first research involving Latinx co-ops, UWCC has conducted the first national compilation of U.S. Latinx cooperatives of all co-op types and sectors. Research for this report was conducted in collaboration with renowned scholar Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard, professor of City University of New York. Dr. Gordon Nembhard is author of Collective Courage, and her work has inspired the creation of Black-led co-ops nationally.
