From 1984 to 2006, Grassroots Economic Organizing was a print newsletter. Over time, printing became expensive, at least in comparison to having one of those new-fangled websites. That was the future the Internet. Print was dying, so GEO made the leap to being online-only.
And now, most of us spend most of our day commuting on the Information Superhighway. The amount of information available to us is immense. To deal with this, we’ve learned to skim. In fact, pretty much all we do is skim. The problem for us in GEO is that what we write is not meant to be skimmed. We craft our articles with care, but even more importantly, we believe in what we say. It’s not “content” to be “consumed,” it’s substantive information for you to reflect on and discuss with others, and which may even energize you go out and make some news of your own.
We’ll continue publishing online, of course, but we’ve missed creating something tangible. A paper journal is a healthy alternative to doomscrolling. There’s no comment section, but maybe you’ll comment on it to a friend over coffee. There’s no Like button, but we hope you like it and find it informative. There is, on the other hand, a Subscribe button on our site.
Maybe print wasn’t dying after all. Maybe it was simply neglected. And maybe it still has as much to offer as it ever did.
We hope you enjoy our relaunched journal. But, we hope you enjoy it actively, not passively. You have friends working alongside you, across the nation and around the world. Each issue will bring you just a small fraction of their stories, but enough to get at least some idea how big the solidarity economy is, and how much bigger it could be. Perhaps their stories will inspire you, and one day soon, perhaps your story will inspire them.
