An Interview with Yochai Gal of TechCollective

Co-founder of two worker co-ops, Yochai Gal, joins us to talk about his co-op's recent merger with another tech worker cooperative, and how the new co-op incorporated the best of both of the worker co-ops that formed it. Then Yochai shares his (rather critical) thoughts on the trajectory of the USFWC over the last several years, and why he thinks it has largely failed to fulfill it's original goals.

Remembering Clark Arrington

Cooperative lawyer and organizer Clark Arrington recently passed away. Clark was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame in 2021.

A pragmatic visionary, Clark Arrington used his legal training to address capital formation for worker cooperatives. From developing bylaws that established capital accounts to pioneering preferred stock that maintained democratic control, Arrington has had a foundational influence on worker cooperatives.

Tenants Rise Up

Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis are the cofounders of the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU), a multilingual formation organizing across the vast sprawl of the city. Situated in multiple organizing histories, LATU organizes to build tenant power and to prefigure a housing system not built on a foundation of extractive and carceral relationships with landlords or the state.

It's Going Down is a digital community center and media platform featuring news, opinion, podcasts, and reporting on autonomous social movements and revolt across so-called North America from an anarchist perspective.

Disaster Compassion is Real in North Carolina

Outside a church on Haywood Road (a major commercial strip in West Asheville) a child held a huge posterboard sign that read “FOOD BABY,” smiling and waving at the cars… because there was free baby food being given away at the church. Keep going, and you’ll go past lines outside restaurants where food is being cooked and given away for free. Then another church with another relief site. Then the fire station, more relief. Then the anarchist bookstore, bustling with people self-organizing to get supplies out everywhere across the region.

Remembering Connie Canney, a Justice Warrior

Connie Canney was a white woman who I believe epitomized what real solidarity is, long before people even called it that. Solidarity is how you live your life in support of human beings – even when you could lose a lot taking the right stance.

Workers’ Self-recovery in Times of Crisis

Social capital has proven to be a fundamental component of all the experiences, along with the ability to mobilize resources at the individual level making them converge into the collective project of recovering the company.

Ella Baker, Septima Clark, and The Highlander Folk School

This episode takes us into the long history of the Civil Rights Movement as we talk about the methods and legacies of two long-distance runners, Ella Baker (1903-1986) and Septima Clark (1898-1987).

Baker was a legendary organizer who espoused a group-centered form of leadership and insisted that deep change required the long-haul “spadework” of community organizing. Clark, known as “the teacher of the Civil Right movement,” built a network of Southern Citizenship Schools, which were crucial to the emergence of Black voting power in the early 1960s.
