What’s It Like to Coordinate a Mutual-Aid Network in Minneapolis?

Before this week, the challenges were already constant. We are small and grassroots, which means capacity is always the pressure point. Funding is limited, volunteer time is limited, and the needs do not arrive one at a time.

In Minneapolis this week, after ICE officers killed Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti and escalated their surge in arresting people accused of being undocumented, community care has been the most visible response to uncertainty. Neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street, the city is practicing its own form of care, showing up for each other in ways that matter most.

Today, boxes of diapers line the floor of our South Minneapolis office, formula is stacked carefully, and winter clothes are sorted for delivery. In the past week, we noticed a sudden surge in requests for baby formula, diapers, wipes, winter clothing, and groceries.
