Catalyzing worker co-ops & the solidarity economy

Fighting Gentrification and Creating Community Spaces

Whilst in New York in September I met lots of interesting people. @verleenkillz linked me with @awo_ifatade who is part of a community of people who started a housing Co-op for Black and Brown folks in East New York. They provide affordable housing and event spaces for those who want to have an affordable start to kick off their projects and lives in reaction to the growing costs of living.

They also help with a local community garden down the road. Here Asere tells me more about the project.

Asere took me on a tour around his area of East New York and his housing Co op. New York is a beautiful city under going gentrification with other international cities - it is often the multicultural element of the city that suffers.

Asere himself campaigns for his views and lives his principal by providing affordable spaces for those who need it. He then took me off to another project around the corner called Green Gems Gardens where a space once used to dump rubbish is now converted to a green haven in East New York.

I filmed this during my 2018 stay in New York where I met and documented several people most days of the two weeks.
